Mitos Urbanos
Numa amena tarde de final de Inverno e tendo o Tejo como pano de fundo do outro lado da janela, Quaresma, Pacman e Virgul falaram à Mondo Bizarre em nome de uma doninha que insiste em não se esconder. Agora que volta a ser "cool" ouvir rock, os Da Weasel editam um álbum com uma maior presença de guitarras.
Foi um modo de actualização do vosso som ou apenas uma forma de torná-lo mais acessível a outros públicos?
Quaresma - Isso é uma coisa que a gente já andava a fazer. Se calhar as pessoas agora ouvem mais coisas de fusão e coisas mais rock.
Pacman - Tivemos um single com uma onda mais pesada mas não é nada de novo. Se no passado apelidar os Da Weasel de projecto de hip-hop era já redutor, agora chega a ser incorrecto.
Como é que se definem?
Q - Acho que não há uma definição concreta do que é o som dos Da Weasel. É mais uma necessidade de rotular, mas tem a ver com aquilo que nós ouvimos e com as nossas influências.
De que forma a saída do Armando Teixeira, responsável pelos teclados e samplers, moldou o vosso som?
Q - A essência continua lá. O facto dele sair... Somos menos mas somos mais.
P - Less is more. Em concreto, não mudou grande coisa porque nós já tínhamos algumas ideias para o que queríamos fazer. Quanto àquela polémica que, às vezes, se gera em torno das bandas que, sendo portuguesas, cantam em inglês...
Vocês começaram em 93 a cantar em inglês, depois, com o álbum "Dou-lhe com a Alma", passaram para o português. O que pensam acerca de uma banda exprimir-se numa língua que não é a sua? É uma opção artística e deve ser interpretada como tal?
P - Pode ser uma opção artística e pode ser legítimo desde que a pessoa veja as coisas dessa maneira. Nós vivemos em português e falamos em português, portanto é natural que façamos as coisas dessa forma. Agora, compreendo também que, para muitas bandas, cantar na língua materna seria complicado. Mas, para nós, só faz sentido, ou faz 95% de sentido, escrever em português.
Então por que começaram em inglês?
P - Porque na altura ouvia muitas cenas em inglês e era o mais fácil: copiava rimas e fazia as coisas pelos modelos que tinha. Eu julgava que sim, que era mais fácil escrever em inglês mas é muito mais difícil. Porque se tu estás mesmo ciente daquilo que estás a fazer e, até certo ponto, és exigente com o teu trabalho, é muito mais fácil em português. Se eu for apresentar uma letra em inglês a um gajo inglês ou americano, ele vai olhar e dizer que aquilo não faz sentido. Se calhar, não faz sentido em termos de construção de frases... Portanto, é muito mais fácil em português. Pode haver para aí gajos a dizer que é muito mais fácil escrever em inglês, mas é um inglês muito básico.
Q - A menos que seja um nível bastante avançado de inglês.
Como é que surge o Mário Barreiros a produzir "Podes Fugir mas não te Podes Esconder"?
Q - O Mário era uma pessoa com quem já tínhamos pensado trabalhar. E juntou-se o útil ao agradável em relação a este disco, porque era um disco que nós decidimos ser mais orgânico. Fizemos uma coisa que nunca tínhamos feito: irmos para uma sala de ensaios e desbundar e fazer a construção dos temas. Como o Mário domina essa parte melhor que ninguém foi bom e o Mário é uma pessoa formidável. É uma referência na produção de música em Portugal pela qualidade e pelo bom gosto musical que tem.
O vídeo de "Tás na Boa" é tido como a maior produção de sempre realizada com uma formação portuguesa. Querem comentar?
P - É um vídeo que nos deu muito gozo fazer, tivemos condições um pouco fora do normal em Portugal, mas pessoalmente não gosto de ver o vídeo dessa forma, como "a maior produção". Gosto de ver como um vídeo fixe e em que tivemos a oportunidade de fazer uma coisa diferente.
Do último álbum destaca-se ainda a participação dos cubanos Orishas em "Sigue, Sigue!" Como é a relação dos Da Weasel com outras bandas?
Q - O mais importante são as pessoas em si, o que tocam ou deixam de tocar não é importante. Portanto, sim, damo-nos com elementos de outras bandas. A questão musical já é outra história.
P - Cada um respeita o trabalho do outro e, a partir daí, damo-nos com toda a gente.
Q - Quanto aos Orishas, antes deles virem cá pela primeira vez, nós já gostávamos do trabalho deles, de música cubana. Nós vimos um showcase que eles deram e ficámos logo com vontade de convidá-los e depois, por acaso, tocámos juntos em Leiria e, na altura, convidámo-los. A coisa ficou em aberto e foi uma questão da editora entrar em contacto com eles.
A edição do vosso último disco foi precedida da colagem de cartazes com o título do álbum, mas que não remetiam directamente para os Da Weasel. Qual foi o propósito?
Q - O propósito era precisamente a abertura do nosso site. E esses teasers...
P - Era um teaser, basicamente. A função é mesmo espicaçar a curiosidade das pessoas e, então, quando ias àquela morada, clicavas numa cena que tinha a ver com os Da Weasel e com o "Podes Fugir mas não te Podes Esconder". Era tentar chegar ao máximo de pessoas de uma forma diferente. E preparar o terreno - como o Quaresma estava a dizer - para a abertura do site. "Raízes.com" é um tema que gira à volta da temática do ciberespaço.
Como e para que fins utilizam a Internet?
P - Como um veículo para chegar às pessoas e elas até nós - que é incomparável hoje em dia.
Q - Como complemento de informação, de pesquisa utilizo bastante a Internet.
A pergunta inevitável: e o Napster?
Q - O Napster... É uma pena que já tenha ido. Era um veículo óptimo para a divulgação. Pelo menos, a minha utilização era essa: conhecer coisas quando não me apetecia ir chatear os gajos às lojas ou estar na bicha da Fnac. Então, fazia downloads mas a seguir ia comprar os discos.
Relativamente aos Gorillaz, é sabido que vocês se tinham antecipado à criação de alter-egos e, depois, eles chegaram-se à frente porque tinham dinheiro para isso. Como é que se sentem? Sentem-se ultrajados?
P - Não. E são conceitos diferentes: Da Weasel utilizou aquilo como um complemento, os Gorillaz vivem mesmo disso, são uma banda virtual e é uma cena diferente.
Querem explicar os vossos alter-egos?
Q - Eles são um pouco nós próprios mas exagerados ao cubo. No meu caso, eu sou uma personagem ligada à Natureza, calma, mas com poderes aplicados ao meio ambiente, à Terra e aquelas coisas meio freaks.
P - O meu é a exploração de uma personagem de ficção, com algumas coisas positivas e outras negativas, uma cena exagerada, uma personagem que toma muitas substâncias para as coisas serem mais agradáveis.
Virgul - O meu é o Golias, um gajo cheio de força, no meio de muitas mulheres, muito pacífico, muito calmo. Uma estrela de filme porno.
(Pacman) Como foi a experiência de proferir as "Estórias Maradas" em Almada no final de 2000, no âmbito do programa "VIA: Cidade. Subúrbio. Capital"?
P - Foi fixe. Enfim, se fosse fazer hoje, faria de uma maneira diferente. Mas foi porreiro poder trabalhar com o Adolfo Luxúria Canibal - que lia textos meus. Foi muito fixe porque aquilo [os textos] é uma cena muito pesada e foi um bom feeling ter o Adolfo a ler aqueles textos. Fui convidado pelo pessoal do VIA. Se fizesse hoje, fazia, então, de um modo diferente, mas estamos sempre a aprender.

The answer surfaced very quickly once I made contact with the “inner smoker” and followed the chain of feelings to determine the “core feeling” was that the “inner smoker” was trying to get by smoking. It was about “love”. At the unconscious level, smoking was “love”. Any wonder it was hard to quit… love is a very basic human need.

There was this guy see.
